45 Virtues – Craig

category: 45 virtues author: shanta

At the end of May Craig and I started attending a Raja Yoga meditation class. My friend had been going and she shared a bit of what she was learning and I signed up for the next session. I always thought that meditation was sitting in lotus position and…well, I wasn’t sure what you were suppose to be doing after that…hence why I never meditated. In this class we are sitting in chairs and learning how to return to the pure positive energy that we all are…it’s awesome! We are really enjoying the class and are already seeing differences in how we think and our relationship.

Two weeks ago our teacher gave us an assignment to choose someone who has hurt us or that we have difficulty with and write down 45 virtues for that person. The exercise was so powerful the first time I did it that I decided to pick a new person every week and write down at least 45 of their virtues.

I am sharing what I wrote for Craig because he is not someone I have a lot of problems with (good thing since we’re married) but we have had our moments. I also found that writing down 45 of his virtues was more difficult than when I had done it the first time. I have a lot of expectations when it comes to him and so my mind often goes to the things and areas I am disappointed in. This exercise really made me see how negatively I think about him and how important it is for me to focus on all of his positive virtues…because he has a lot just like everyone else.

When I made my list, I only wrote the virtue if I could think of an example of it – just so you know that I didn’t sit there pulling words out of a hat. :)

Dear Craig,
Thank you for LOVING me. I admire so much that you are HARD WORKING and an awesome PROVIDER. You remind me to be more GENEROUS, GIVING, THOUGHTFUL and NICE. I am thankful that you are FORGIVING. I love when you are CURIOUS, ADVENTUROUS, SILLY, FUNNY, PLAYFUL and FUN. You are such a great example of the importance of LOYALITY and PUNCTUALITY. It’s a wonderful feeling when you are PROTECTIVE of me and the children. When you use your PROBLEM SOLVING, RESOURCEFUL and SMART ideas – you really show how DETERMINED you are to find solutions.
I am so grateful that our children are able to witness someone who is CARING, KIND, EMPATHETIC, ACCEPTING, CONCERNED, SELFLESS and ENCOURAGING toward them and others.
Because you are ORGANIZED, RESPONSIBLE, KNOWLEDGEABLE and HELPFUL we live a peaceful life.
You know how to be POSITIVE and ENCOURAGING when I am losing hope.
I’ve seen you be RESPECTFUL and PATIENT in tough moments.
I have felt your SENSITIVITY, CONCERN and UNDERSTANDING in times of doubt. In times of confusion I have experienced your TRUST.
When you use CONFIDENCE, INSIGHT and are being OPEN, I know anything is possible.
I can feel your MOTIVATION, INTEREST and HONESTY about wanting to be the best you can be and I love being a witness to the SEEKER within.

Love, Shanta

Give it a try – pick someone that has hurt you or that you have problems with and write down 45 of their virtues…you’d be amazed what it could do for your life!

What I learned today – Day 9

category: what i learned today author: shanta

I’ve been down the last few days. The birth I attended at the beginning of the week has really raised some questions about whether I am cut out or even have the qualities to be a birth doula. Sucks. Anyway, because of that I have not been very positive and tend to shut down when I feel this way…not much learning going on…

As I sat around today with a bit of a pout and not much motivation to do much of anything – I did come up with some business ideas, I answered an email to a business contact that I might be able to partner with…I did take a few small actions.

Normally I would just shut down and not take any action at all. I have been learning over that last few months that even though the results and rewards are slow to come when perhaps, all you can do in a day is send out an email – they do come. I thought a lot about that lesson today…do one small thing. And that is what I did.

Dr. Mom – Introduction

category: Dr. Mom author: shanta

I was thinking the other day that there are probably a lot of people that would enjoy coming to one of my Dr. Mom with Essential Oils meetings but either live too far away or just can’t make it on the dates I have scheduled. So I am going to create a virtual meeting here on my blog. And it will be a handy reference if you decided to give oils a try. Here we go:

Hi! Welcome to our virtual Dr. Mom with Essential Oils. My name is Shanta and I have been using oils for over 8 years. Back then several people in my family had started using oils and while I was slightly interested, I had just had a baby and didn’t feel I had the time to learn about them. My mom kept encouraging me to use them with our then 9mth old son and again, I just kept putting it off not feeling that I had the time or money to get into them.

I can’t recall the exact circumstances but there was a day when I did a google search. I started reading about how oils have a frequency (energy), that every living thing has a frequency. A lightbulb went off and I was really excited. I understood quickly how powerful oils could be to support a person physically, emotionally and spiritually. Awesome! I was hooked and didn’t even have any yet!!

I had an aunt who lived close by who was using them as well and decided to go and check them out. She pulled out her box and started passing them to me -

Aunt: “What do you think of this one?”
Me: Stinks (I’ll explain during Purity why this happens)
Aunt: “Everyone loves this one…”
Me: Stinks
Finally she says:
Aunt: “Well this is lavender, most people like it…”
Me: “It’s ok” (but really I thought it was stinky too and I had the worst headache but didn’t want her to think was a complete weirdo)

She gave me a small bottle of it and I asked her how to use it. She told me to put one drop in my the palm of my hand and rub it on my foot. I asked her what it would do and she said “I’m not sure, you’ll have to see”. Great, I had oil and I knew how to use it…off I went.

That night I sat on the edge of my bed and put one drop in my palm and rubbed it on my foot, then the other. I felt silly. It didn’t even feel like there was any oil going onto my foot. Craig who is looking on says “what is it suppose to do?” Me: “I don’t know…I’m just doing what she told me”. So I did that for the next several nights.

Now, I do have to share that at this time in my life I was depressed. Now looking back it’s likely that I was in severe postpartum depression as we had lost our daughter the year before and by this time had a 10 month old – had moved across the country and we were very financially stressed…it was a difficult time. I was sleeping 6-8 hours during the day, AND sleeping a full 8 hours at night. It was a very discouraging time.

So…I’ve been putting the oil on my feet for a few nights and am on the computer reading everything I can…and something happens. Craig comes onto messenger and asks me a question. We’re chatting and I look down at the time 11:30am…11:30? I’m usually sleeping at 11:30 – I’m awake!!!! I was just beside myself that I was awake and didn’t feel tired. I knew immediately that the lavender was the reason – it was the only thing I had changed and only a few days after using it…I was awake!

Six drops of lavender changed my life forever.

That was the start of my journey with oils. I am not an aromatherapist, I am not an expert – I’m just a mom who has done a lot of reading and follows her gut. What I share will be a combination of information taken from my personal reference guides and personal experience.  I encourage everyone to do their own research and follow their own instincts. Feel free to ask my questions at anytime either in the comments or by email – I’m happy to share whatever I know. I hope you enjoy learning about these powerful, fun, healing droplets.

What I learned today – Day 8

category: what i learned today author: shanta

What did I learn today…sigh.

I learned today that sometimes doing one small thing has to be enough, even if it doesn’t feel like it.

Today like most days I have been a parent – I felt like a loser.  I still haven’t figured out if my expectations are too high or if I’m just ok with delivering substandard action. That’s not something I’m going to figure out tonight, although I suspect is a bit of both.

Anyway…I got caught up on twitter and then trying to figure out how to make some simple changes to my blog (which I never did figure out) and before I knew it, it was 2ish and I had done nothing. The kids were downstairs likely watching tv/playing and I was went into “I’m a loser mother mode” and finally decided that instead of feeling sorry for myself, to do something. I called them and told them to put on their bathing suits and they started running around calling to each other “mom told us to put on our bathing suits…why?” “where’s my mine…I wonder what we are doing”…

It reminded me that if I can remember to just make the choice to do something positive when I am feeling badly about myself – hopefully I’ll just start doing it automatically before I get to the point of feeling that way.

I slathered sunblock on them, turned a nob for the sprinkler and they had a great afternoon…it was one small thing but it was enough for today.

What I learned today – Day 7

category: what i learned today author: shanta

So back in February I had started “What did I learn today” but it was short lived. I can’t even remember what happened or why I stopped…but I did. And this being the 7th of July (as I look at the clock and it says 11:59pm)…I am just going to pick up where I left off and see if I can finish it my goal.

I have as Lady Gaga would say a bad romance with twitter. I love it and I hate it. On one hand it keeps me connected with the pulse of the birthing world, the natural health world and the world in general…but it also is a place where it’s easy for anyone to step onto a high soapbox and not get off.  I don’t like this “in real life” and I don’t like it anymore in cyberworld.

Today I learned why I keep my tweet account open – because when it’s good, it’s really good.

I attended a birth on Monday/Tuesday and was processing some of the moments that were very challenging and frustrating for me. I only have one “real life” friend that is really into birth and she is a great support…but I didn’t want to talk about the negativity of the situation, I just wanted to share it and get it out of me…

As I off loaded into Twitterverse I was received by my doula friends with loving, supportive words and support. It’s exactly what I needed and I was able to let it go and have a great day where these thoughts and memories were no longer clouding my mind.

I am a person that needs to process out and thanks to twitter and my twitter friends I was able to do that. I am learning more and more each day that nothing is perfect and everything is perfect. The exact thing that causes me to feel so challenged is also the same thing that can hold me up.

the…month(s) it’s been…

category: everyday thoughts author: shanta

Ok, well let’s start with some updated pics of Nyah’s cat attack cuts.

Photo taken June 19th, 2010

Photo taken June 19th, 2010. Where they had put stitches - which as you can see did not work - there was a bump under the skin which is now almost gone and you can barely see the stitches holes.

Photo taken June 19th, 2010 - almost no sign of scar!!

I’m happy with how things are healing. I’ll be happy if the scar on her face lightens but only time will tell.

May was so super crazy that it even surprised me when I was still breathing on June 1st. At the end of May I started attending a meditation class. It meets once a week and runs for 35 weeks. It’s a huge time commitment but I am learning so much and have seen changes in my relationships and life in general already and have only been to few classes. I really felt that 2010 would be a defining year for me and that I was in store for a major transformation and I was right. I am being exposed to people, ideas, challenges that are just pushing me in so many new directions.

June was slower than May but still busy. I decided for time and financial reasons not to put in a garden this summer. But I started visiting a friend while Cam was at a weekly homeschool function and she has beautiful gardens. I asked her if she would help me next year as I know little to nothing about gardening and she introduced me to the book she was using – All New Square Foot Gardening: Grow More in Less Space and let me borrow it. I couldn’t resist. So I got my garden plans ready that week. Because we were so late in getting it in there were not very many plants available but I think we did got a lot of neat things to try and are pretty excited about how well the garden is doing already…drum roll please….

our garden is 2x8 - 16 square ft.

We have cuccumber, zucchini, lettuce, cabbage, leaks, red, green, yellow and orange peppers, tomatoes and cheery tomatoes, radishes, carrots, green onions, beans and peas and celery!!

Radishes grown from seed - week 1!! So cute!

Bean and pea seeds breaking ground!

Cuccumbers with LOTS of flowers - and a cute pair of toes...I'm growing those too!

I’ve done gardens before but have never felt like I know how  to ensure they are able to thrive. Square Foot gardening really makes it easy and organized and a lot of food can be grown in smaller spaces. I love going out and welcoming each new day by saying hello to my garden – there is a special kind of peace from witnessing nature up close.

Interestingly about a week after planting the garden I happened to notice a twitter post about a documentary Food Matters and took some time to go and look around their website. They have linked several free documentaries and movies and one of them is a 10min video called Homegrown Revolution – about a family who has transformed their entire city property into gardens that produce enough food to feed them all year. It’s so inspirational and they highlight how growing your own food is true freedom. That hit home for me. I want to be free. So I foresee gardening becoming a big part of my life. I will have to maximize my small garden plot while I continue to live in this house but will be learning and planning for when we are in a bigger home. I have realized that it’s so important that we learn how to harvest seeds from our plants, and learn how to get the most from whatever growing seasons we have – and plant and eat what grows in our climates – it’s just going to back to basics – good for the earth, good for us.

July is birth free right now so I am looking forward to a bit of a rest and some summer fun…oh, and of course some blogging!

cat attack

category: everyday thoughts author: shanta

Cat Attack report
Date: March 29th, 2010
Time: 1:30(ish)
Place: Natural Mom Loves Prada’s Living Room

I am talking on the phone. The kids are playing on the floor with toys, each one playing by themselves. The cat creeping low the ground walks up and sits behind Nyah. Looks at me. For a split second I know something is not right but shrug it off…a split second later the cat, growling, hissing jumps onto Nyah. She tried to push it down, it jumps again. And again. And again. …and again.

The cat eventually ran away once I grabbed Nyah and started to run into a different room. It kept growling and hissing and kept trying to come back. It finally ran into our room where I closed the door and it stayed till it’s owner came and caged it.

I’ve really watered down describing the whole experience because there are no words to describe it and it still upsets me to really think about it too much. I was the most scared I have ever been in my life and was screaming and terrified – this was not just a cat scratch – it was a deliberate attack and it was terrifying.
These are not great pictures of the injuries but I wasn’t concerned about photo quality when I took them that evening about 5 hours after the incident:

Top of Nyah head - you can see a deep scratch and then to the far right a small red dot - there were several of those red puncture marks all over her head.

This was the most severe scratch and goes all way into her head - when they did the stitches they stitched in hair so you can't really see how far the scratch really goes.

Nyah's ear is quite swollen here and stayed that way for several days. At the top of her ear you can see a small red dot - that is a cut that ran down inside her ear.

Bite marks on the top of her shoulder.

Bite marks on back.

Cluster of deep scratches on arm.

Other arm.

Scratch on leg. She also had a few more minor scratches behind this leg, and on her bum.

We covered all the scratches we could see with lavender before quickly bringing Nyah to the hospital for the large scratch on her temple/head. I thought that some might be interested to see how well her scars heal using essential oils.

In my reference guide these are the oils listed for scarring:
Lavender, Rose, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Geranium, Myrrh

I have all these oils except Rose.

So, Nyah’s scratch that needed stitches is now healed but the skin is still quite red and I believe a scar will develop.

Day 17 - mostly healed.

I would like to minimize how big or dark it is, so I am going to try reduce the amount of scarring that forms by using a blend they recommend:
lavender, lemongrass & geranium
I will do this everyday – if I can remember twice a day once in the morning and once at night.

Then I will apply, also twice a day:
Frankincense, Helichrysum, & Myrrh

I will also be doing this on the cluster of cuts on her arm:

Day 17 - cluster of scratches healed.

I’ll post a new pic every week…check back!

safe babywearing

This is a post I wrote for P.U.S.H. blog but thought that some of my readers here might appreciate it also ~ happy babywearing!

As a woman, wife, mother and doula I do my best to navigate life using one powerful tool – common sense. So when I heard about the Infantino Sling recall – my heart went out to the families who lost their small babies and figured there was a manufacturing defect with this specific sling and honestly didn’t think much more of it. I finally realized that I might want to be in the know when I kept seeing facebooks postings from fellow doulas, and birthie friends AND then I got an email from my dad with the recall notice and saw a picture of the sling:

My heart sank. Just from looking at this picture I can tell that this would not be a safe sling for a newborn baby and I am far from a babywearing expert.
And if I am being totally honest this is not a sling I would recommend for any baby of any age but that is only my opinion of course.

As announcements of this recall rang out so did the new recommendations of Health Canada:

However, earlier this month, Health Canada issued an advisory for parents to “exercise caution” when using any type of infant sling or soft infant carrier because of the risk of the baby falling out or suffocating.

While exercising caution is always very good common sense when doing anything with your new baby – this advisory definitely makes it sound like all slings have the same degree of risk – which I do not feel is accurate information.

Babywearing International has these very clear safety guidelines:

1. Make sure your baby can breathe. Baby carriers allow parents to be hands-free to do other things … but you must always remain active in caring for your child. No baby carrier can ensure that your baby always has an open airway; that’s your job.

a. Never allow a baby to be carried, held, or placed in such a way that his chin is curled against his chest. This rule applies to babies being held in arms, in baby carriers, in infant car seats, or in any other kind of seat or situation. This position can restrict the baby’s ability to breathe. Newborns lack the muscle control to open their airways. They need good back support in carriers so that they don’t slump into the chin-to-chest position.

b. Never allow a baby’s head and face to be covered with fabric. Covering a baby’s head and face can cause her to “rebreathe” the same air, which is a dangerous situation. Also, covering her head and face keeps you from being able to check on her. Always make sure your baby has plenty of airflow. Check on her frequently.

2. Never jog, run, jump on a trampoline, or do any other activity that subjects your baby to similar shaking or bouncing motion. “This motion can do damage to the baby’s neck, spine and/or brain,” explains the American Chiropractic Association.

3. Never use a baby carrier when riding in a car. Soft baby carriers provide none of the protection that car seats provide.

4. Use only carriers that are appropriate for your baby’s age and weight. For example, frame backpacks can be useful for hiking with older babies and toddlers but aren’t appropriate for babies who can’t sit unassisted for extended periods. Front packs usually have a weight range of 8 to 20 pounds; smaller babies may slip out of the carrier, and larger babies will almost certainly cause back discomfort for the person using the carrier.

And they address the recent advisory as saying this:

A correctly-used baby carrier’s positioning should mimic how you would hold a baby in your arms. A normal in-arms holding position is fairly snug to your chest and somewhat close to your face

So let’s put this into visual terms:

can we follow the recommendations of Babywearing International with the sling that was recalled?

The simple answer to the question is no.

Today as in no other time, parents have what seems like unlimited choices when it comes to any product they might be introduced to and slings and wraps are no different. Even though wearing babies has likely been done since the beginning of time and crosses all cultures around the world – it is a relatively new idea in the western hemisphere. With more parents understanding the many benefits to both child and parent from babywearing it is becoming common place for parents to purchase a baby carrier right along side their stroller.

Unfortunately we do not have several generations of babywearing mothers to pass down it’s wisdom and techniques. This along with so many others, is a parenting skill that must be learned and perfected over time. Therefore it’s so important to consult knowledgeable and reliable sources for safety guidelines when first starting out. I would suggest that after understanding the safety guidelines for safe babywearing, it is of utmost importance to choose an appropriate sling, wrap or carrier that will best suit your body type and lifestyle to ensure the safety of your new baby.

I do and will continue to recommend that new parents or parents who have multiple children use a sling, wrap or appropriate baby carrier using knowledge, intuition and common sense. I feel that a carrier can help mothers, fathers and partners more easily transition into life with a newborn as many easy tasks can be accomplished having baby quiet and comfy and their hands free. Here are the websites I would recommend for new parents to consult before purchasing their baby carrier:

what i learned today – day 6

category: what i learned today author: shanta

Well for anyone actually following this month of learning, you will know that I didn’t post anything yesterday which means that I needed to write about two things I learned today.

I actually did learn something yesterday, I just wasn’t in the mood to write.

Yesterday I learned:

When you happen to lose good friends out of your life…they are replaced with better ones.  That is all I am going to say on that one for today.

Today I learned two things about cleaning…

First is that the stove top can lift up so that you can clean the ledge and under the round holes AND it even has a little holder upper thingy like the hood of your car to keep it up while you clean… (so what have you learned today: Shanta has never fully cleaned her stove or oven ever in her life until now).

And the second thing I learned is that when you take apart the vacuum and remove gobs of hair and dust clogged inside – it works like the day you bought it. I knew that you had to clean and change the filters but I didn’t realize you had to actually take apart your vacuum and clean ever piece…that job will always be at the bottom of my list. (and yes, 2nd thing you learned today that I have never taken my vacuum apart to clean it before…we’ve had it for three years)

Wonder what I’ll learn tomorrow…
